$10 million settlement in Sony/BMG radio payola scandal

The New York Attorney General announced this settlement yesterday. Seems that the recording companies gave gifts to radio announcers in return for playing their songs. So let me get this straight: The music industry denounces peer to peer downloading as illegal and goes to great lengths to sue thousands of people - but at the same time resorts to illegal and unethical methods to get airplay for their music.

Seems rather inconsistent - and perhaps a fundamental failure to understand consumer desires and the tools available (ie the Internet) to market their products.
